A question we are often asked is if we treat children and babies -the answer is yes. Babies and children benefit from osteopathic treatment just as we grown-ups do. Our osteopathic approach is gentle and tailored to each child's age and complaint.  Our admin team will work with you during the booking process to find the best osteopath that suits your child’s needs.

Osteopathy for your growing child.

During childhood, we set our physical foundations for the rest of our lives. While osteopathic treatment can help your child get relief from existing complaints, it can also aid their overall health and wellbeing in years to come. An osteopath can guide your child to set good postural habits and help them develop a general awareness of how their body moves, both now and as they grow into adulthood.

A common complaint we see in children is growing pains. Growing pains usually cause an aching or throbbing feeling in the legs. This pain often occurs in the front of the thighs, the calves or behind the knees. Usually, both legs hurt. They often strike in the late afternoon or early evening and disappear by morning. Sometimes the pain will wake a child in the middle of the night. Growing pains occur during periods of rapid growth. It is thought that muscle pain at night from overuse during the day, is the most likely cause.

Another common question we get from parents is, how does it develop? And, how can we help? Tension on ligaments and tendons can be greatly eased with osteopathic management. At home, massage, hot baths, and gentle stretching can be a great source of relief. There are times when you should consult your GP about growing pains - as always, there is some great advice at healthinfo.org.nz.
