Jo Stutton - My work as a Human and Equine Osteopath

I have been riding since I was 4 years old and my dream growing up was always to be a Vet. Life took me along a different path and I graduated as an Osteopath from the British School of Osteopathy in London in 2001. My love of horses, animals and the outside never left me however, so in 2007 I started another year's Post Grad study in Equine Osteopathy. It’s a decision I have never once regretted!

I have since done further advanced equine osteopathic studies, equine biomechanics courses, full horse veterinary dissections, gait studies and a lot of study into the function and structure of the equine hoof! The techniques and observational skills I have learned and honed on horses has helped me immensely in my human work too!

As horses can’t tell me where the problem is, I have to use my eyes and hands to assess and diagnose their problems. Humans are very keen to tell me ALL the places that hurt, but again, assessing how you move and what your body tissues tell my hands, helps me to build a really clear biomechanical picture! I love treating horses and their riders as the combination of both elements is essential to the optimal performance of the horse and the comfort and development of the rider!

Common things I treat with horses are;

  • pain and stiffness issues
  • lameness
  • loss of performance
  • weigh loss/condition changes
  • head flicking
  • arthritic issues.

A lot of the work I do is on completion horses, whether it’s pre/post race or as part of an ongoing performance training programme. Rider postural issues have a HUGE influence on how the horse can move and perform and riders often find training problems with the horse improve hugely once their own body is moving better.
